If you stay here too long, you'll end up frying your brain.

another thing!

Champions Online is going for $10 now on Steam!  they've also added a free demo, which is pretty different than most MMO demos in that you can play it forever (which means free character creator forever, and trust me, it's worth it), but you only get the tutorial level (which is actually pretty long).

so yeah!  in case any of you wanted to check it out, now's definitely the time.  it's less expensive to buy the game now than the monthly fee, for crying out loud.

12/31/09 08:27 am - 2010 cometh

I know it's pretty early morning to be writing this but I'll probably be too wrapped up the rest of the day to think of it.  so!  goodbye 2009!  you started out awesome but got sucky later on but you're ending on a good note.  goodbye '00s!  on the flipside you started out sucky but at the end got at least tolerable.  I have high hopes for the 2010s at any rate.

I can't wrap my mind around reminiscing on an entire decade where I was too immature for half of it so you just get another 2009 retrospective.  this time with favorites!

Favorite PC Game of '09: Left 4 Dead 2!  massive improvements on the original while still keeping a likable cast.

Favorite Console Game of '09: you know, I'd probably have to go with Punch-Out.  it's great to see Nintendo revive an old franchise, and the boxers vaguely reminded me of TF2 with the different ethnicities and overall craziness.  right now I'm blazing through Muramasa, but I haven't beaten it so I don't count it...but I'm really liking it so far too.

Favorite Handheld Game of '09: and here I'd have to say Rock Band Unplugged.  it's probably the most I've ever gotten out of my PSP thus far, and it was good for people like me as I have no one to really play the normal RB games with and don't want to waste money on peripherals (even if it is the series' main gimmick).

Favorite Animated Movie of '09: Coraline!  Up was more emotional and PatF was a great return to classic Disney form, but Coraline is the brand of weirdness I love.  it was like a modern-day fairy tale.

Favorite Live-Action Movie of '09: District 9.  the aliens were cool, the plot surprising, and the documentary-style it had was a neat addition.

Favorite Album of '09: don't make me choose!  D:  probably a tossup between Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion and Mew's No More Stories.  they're both psychedelic road trips.

and that's a wrap!

I just saw District 9 and Avatar in the space of two days

my mind is exploding

12/22/09 12:02 pm - year in retrospect

it isn't the end of '09 yet but I feel like reflecting on it.  SO okay.

stuff that went down )

my next entry probably won't be till Christmas or after, so have an early Merry Christmas!

12/18/09 08:48 am - finals vanquished!

I keep having dreams about musicians, what

finals are done!  my last one was at 8 AM today which I usually sleep through nowadays (sob sob, my morning person-ness).  my mom called me at 7 as a sort of alarm, it was pretty funny, it took me five minutes of mumbling to tell her that she startled me.  and it was 9 degrees outside!  really woke you up, that's for sure.  BUT that is all done with now.  back to home I go!

I have been craving funny animal platformers lately, probably since my friend was playing Spyro 3 a couple of days ago.  so now I am rampaging through the original, aiming for 100%.  it's actually easier than it sounds, so far anyway.  at least I have Tree Tops out of the way.  also I rescued a dragon named Bubba.

I had a huge spriting kick lately but now it has died down a bit and that makes me sad.  I want to do more but the inspiration's not hitting me...ah well, I'm sure I'll feel a lot more inspired once I'm home.  or something.  hopefully.

oh, and happy Saturnalia to all you ancient Romans out there.

12/10/09 09:43 am - Writer's Block: Role model

Is there any character from a novel or film that serves as a role model to you? What kind of advice do you think she or he would give you regarding any major issues you're facing right now?

he would tell me that things are aw' a muddle.

here, have some pictures of snow from yesterday:

snow always starts looking icky if you don't get it right after it falls )

that eventually turned into a thunderstorm. what nature was on, I don't know.

12/4/09 01:38 pm - headphonic update

okay now that I'm not half asleep and seething I can see a little clearer now.

Sennheiser's warranties last up to two years, nice. only problem is that I got rid of my receipt from Amazon because there were no (immediate) problems. aaghgh. anyone know how to possibly re-send the receipts they give you via e-mail? or am I screwed?

even if I am, there's always getting a replacement jack. the cord'll get shorter but really that's the least of my worries.

I bought crappy earbuds in the meantime. WOW is the quality difference noticeable. I had worried when I first got the headphones that I was succumbing to that audiophile "it's said to sound better, thus I'm hearing things that aren't actually there" mindset, but no, there really is a difference. the headphones made the sound richer, like it was coming from all around you, whereas these just sound like two laptop-quality speakers placed in front of you. pffff.

I guess it's like how I feel about the DS Lite's screen compared to the DS/GBA. once you've gone in you can't go back.

even my dad joked that technology hates me when I e-mailed him. yeah okay dad I realize that too.

in other news, Myst is at Good Old Games.com. heck yes you are the most complicated game I tried to play when I was six!

12/3/09 11:52 pm - I can't take this anymore

why does technology seem to really, really hate me lately? now my headphones broke. my $70 Sennheisers. I only got them this summer.

one of the wires near the jack got pulled out. really? all I do is just shove my iPod in my pocket and run around all day.

headphones do break on me easily...it's always one ear that goes out. is it really just movement that can do this? I never outright mistreat my headphones, I just...happen to always have them in.

but these are supposed to be high quality and I paid good money for them...

the upside: my dad somehow has a pair of the exact same ones that I know he's not using.

the downside: I'm not gonna be home for a while.

I guess I can go buy a cheap pair of earbuds at our bookstore...but man I've come to hate those things. because they're not noise cancelling. I hate it when I can hear what people're listening to through their headphones and I hate it when people can hear what I'm listening to.

but I really like listening to music...

aarghghgh. fffffff.

WHY has everything decided to die on me within a month? it's like how celebrities kept dying over the summer!

really my only piece of trustworthy equipment anymore is my computer itself. god forbid anything happen to it.

12/1/09 09:03 am - more Christmas stuff

happy December! December has to be one of my favorite months, probably entirely because of Christmas. I mean, besides obviously holiday-themed stuff, there's also a bunch of winter decorations and songs, so it's like they're celebrating an entire season and that's cool. the other seasons must be jealous.

this journal is primarily if you want to give me a present in some way, shape, or form! you don't have to, of course not, I'm not greedy, but in case you want to.

this list specially compiled with internet friends in mind )

and if YOU want something similar to the above, feel free to let me know. I can't guarantee anything but I have a gift list typed up for people and you'll be added.

now all I need is snow.

CHRISTMAS TREE = ERECTED

SCROOGE = VANQUISHED

11/18/09 11:06 pm - ugh

can anyone figure out what's wrong with my tablet? I think it's the pen...

my pen randomly stopped writing when I was using it to draw today.

first I tried replacing the battery, thinking it had died. that didn't work.

upon further investigation, the tablet sometimes recognizes the pen if I hold down the button, but that's a hassle and it eventually stops working anyway, such that I have to mash down the button over again.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the tablet drivers, it still isn't responding.

the model is Aiptek Slim Tablet 600U, if that helps any.

this is the worst place for this to happen. I use my tablet every day, and I'm in the middle of nowhere, can't drive, don't have any money...

just as I was beginning to draw some new character references too.

this sucks.

11/16/09 01:28 pm - dear journal,

hello LJ! it has been a while. relatively. considering how much I normally post in you, it has been a while.

what has been going on? well I've had the flu, or at least a mild version of it. I think it's just from the vaccine and whatnot. I'm getting over it, finally, though I had to go home for the weekend. I think it really helped, I felt better being around my cats and videogames instead of cold brick walls and a thousand other sick people. my body held on just enough for me to get through A Beautiful Mind in film class, as I pretty much blanked out afterwards and got a fever and went home.

and when I came back my printer ran out of ink and my lava lamp's lightbulb died. hooray!

I have my classes for next semester now, provided they don't get changed up come spring (which usually happens). a lot of them seem to work well together, such as World Lit, Inter-Cultural Communication, and World History. and then there's Abnormal Psychology and Writing for Media, which are pretty random but hey I like them.

now if my nose would stop running, I'd be all set!

11/3/09 08:33 pm - this entry relates to Team Fortress 2

you guys did realize that if you mailed in the coupons on the TF2 class updates that they'd actually send you stuff, right?

well, not quite the items...but.

I was expecting keychains since that's what they sent the last time (around the Scout update, and I mailed mine in during the Spy update), but I got much more.

SAXTON HALE! )

I got two of the postcard ones. now it's just a matter of who to send them to.

as for BARBERSHOP ACTION, that's totally getting framed.

11/3/09 08:15 am - recovery

okay I went to bed at 10 and immediately fell asleep and never woke up once.  amazing.

so I suppose to justify a real entry I'll talk about my life last week, since this week is currently uninteresting!

I have all my midterms done, finally.  the teachers were nice enough and they ended up spread out over the whole month but at the same time it was pretty annoying to have a constant flow of tests for an extended period of time.  I think I'd rather have them crammed in one week.

Halloween was pretty uninteresting too, especially since it was on a Saturday.  no classes to go show off costumes at, after all.  not that I was anything eye-catching--a '90s grunge kid, and I had a sinking feeling that only those knowledgeable in music culture would get it.  c'mon people!  you grew up in the '90s!  don't you remember the flannel!

...but then again I wear my flannel normally too so perhaps I was going as myself!

I also finished John Dies at the End, which is the best book I've read all year.  I have the .pdf if anyone wants it.

the flu is going around here, which is making me panic in the back of my mind.  everywhere that has a seasonal flu shot keeps running out of it, but I have a H1N1 vaccine appointment tomorrow.  I know there's a risk of GBS, but really, getting GBS is a much rarer event than getting swine flu, and dying from it is even more improbable than dying from swine flu.  I'd rather take the risk.

I think the worst part about possibly getting the flu is not what it'd do to me, but rather, that I'd have to go home and miss classes.
